Choosing a wedding photography style for your day can be complicated and time-consuming, with so many options available to you. If you’re just starting your search, you may not even realize that there are so many styles to choose from.

Before I elaborate more, I want to stress that photography is an art-form, and no two photographers will ever be the exact same. Much of your consideration may go into the photographers themselves and their personality or approach to a wedding day.

However, there are a lot of similar trends across the wedding photography world that you might become familiar with as you continue your search for a wedding photographer. Here are some things to consider and help guide your decision.

Start by looking at photos that you like

Save them to a mood board and look at them as a whole. Can you see a common theme or set of characteristics that describe the photos?

When you think of your own wedding photos, what do you see?

Take into consideration stylistic things like color and light. But also dive a little deeper and consider what kind of emotions you’d like to see and feel in your photos.

Consider the feel of your wedding day

With the previous points mentioned above, brainstorm a list of keywords that you’d use to describe your day. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a “theme”, but just an overall style or feel. Once you have your list, keep it on hand while your going through your contending photographers portfolio. What words would you use to describe their work? Do the objectives line up with your list of keywords?

Do you want to be trendy or classic?

There are lots of trends in the wedding industry that are ever-changing. And it seems like nowadays, trends are catching on faster and leaving just as quickly. While some photographers have a good balance of trendy and classic, some lean more in one direction or another.

Will your photos stand the test of time?

What do you want to see when you look back at your photos in 10 years? What about 50 years? Your wedding photos will be your heirloom, so this is an important factor to consider.

Choosing a wedding photography style is not an easy task. It takes a lot of research to find the right fit for you and your wedding day.
