Fine Art Engagement Session Planning

Photographer Advice

If you’re a bride-to-be, you’ve probably spent all winter working on wedding plans, finalizing details, and dreaming of warmer weather. Me too! I know most of your are just as excited as I am to see the trees blooming and the warmer weather moving in. And that can only mean one thing: engagement season is here!

Many of you are currently planning your engagement sessions, so I thought I would share a few of my favorite ideas for this season!

Big style on a small budget

Choosing outfits for your session can be fun, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. One of my brides, Katie, had the brilliant idea of renting a designer dress for her engagement session! Rent The Runway has a wide variety of outfits that would be perfect for your engagement; everything from gorgeous flowing dresses, to classic, casual ensembles. I can’t wait to have an excuse to rent one for myself! 🙂

Mix fabrics & textures

Choosing a variety of different fabrics and textures will create an interesting contrast in your outfits, without being too overwhelming. Try mixing delicate fabrics like tulle or lace with natural textures, like linen or cotton.

Use flowers!

Having beautiful fresh flowers isn’t just for a wedding day, but it’s a great way to enhance your average engagement session, too. I love everything from garden bouquets to flower crowns! You can find fresh-cut blooms and greenery at your local Trader Joe’s or get in touch with your favorite local floral designer.

I’ve pinned some great ideas to plan for your engagement session on a Pinterest board here. There are some great outfit examples (I LOVE the big hats and accessories), along with setting & location ideas! Enjoy the fun of engagement planning! 🙂

Behind the Camera

An observer of the subtle, in-between moments, the way people interact, the feel of a space, and the moments that happen without being prompted. That awareness shapes how I approach a wedding day, with a steady presence and attention to what matters most to you. So you can move through it fully present with the people you love, while everything is documented as it happens.
